Superyachts operate in areas such as the Mediterranean Sea, where most of the immigrant’s paths exist on their way towards Europe and it is highly possible during a relocation or even worse, during a charter the yacht to be involved in a Search And Rescue operation where a large number of immigrants have to be rescued and be embarked on the vessel.
Those rescued should be treated as humanely as the design and limitations of the ship and the capabilities of the crew allow. To protect the rescued persons from adverse weather conditions (including sun and heat), and provide sufficient first aid or medical care is a priority.
During large scale rescue operations, the number of embarked persons will very likely outnumber the ship’s crew. For this reason, careful management is essential for the security and safety of the crew, the guests and the vessel. It is also necessary to give consideration to managing the risk of rescued persons becoming stowaways or, in extremes, even attempting to hijack the ship.
This course will cover all the issues regarding the immigrants’ confinement onboard, how they must be treated, how the crew can be protected when outnumbered by the immigrants, which are the necessary sanitation measures etc.
