We negotiate every day, with co-workers, friends, and spouses. Some negotiations might be small, such as what restaurant will have dinner tonight or who will wash the dishes and some might involve large stakes, such as convince people to stop posing a threat to themselves or to others.
On the occasion of people being rescued at sea such as immigrants, negotiations might be required in order to maintain order and safety onboard a yacht. Likewise, on the occasion of a hostage situation, some negotiation skills will be required in order to make an understanding of the situation as much as possible. Although in such cases professional negotiators will be eventually involved along with the authorities, the former might not be available in short notice.
The crew most likely will be required to conduct some minor negotiations e.g. to settle down an argument or preliminary negotiations in order to gain time till professionals arrive. In other words, it might be required for the crew to gain time and if not solving the issue at least to make sure that situation will not escalate. Last but not least those early stages before authorities appear on the scene are of paramount importance in order to collect as much credible information as possible to provide the authorities when they arrive.
The cornerstone of an effective negotiator is to improve its active listening skills, to be cautious not to raise any additional communication barriers and to understand as much as possible what really is the context of the situation, providing feedback to the speaker so that he or she knows the message is received. Interpersonal skills are important because negotiation is essentially a process of communication, relationship, trust-building and mutual persuasion.
Negotiation skills if used appropriately are a powerful tool in the arsenal of each successful manager. The goal of the course is to practice basic negotiation skills, explain the methods and techniques that can be effectively used in the process of negotiation as well as to demonstrate how to deal with the obstacles and complicating factors.
