A common practice that is used by the pirates during their effort to approach and embark on a superyacht is to choose a yacht sailing alone, off the traffic passages and where the crew will be unable to ask for help. In these cases the yacht has to confront this difficult situation which put the crew and the passengers in great danger.
One of the most effective measures is, after the early recognition of the threat, to perform a series of evasive maneuvers in order to deny embarkation to the potential hijackers.
By this way the yacht either will directly avoid the approaching craft making the embarkation difficult or impossible by altering course and/or increasing speed in a proper way to increase the CPA. The maneuvers will discourage pirates as they will minimize the available time for them and in parallel will offer the yacht the opportunity to approach areas where assistance is available or in close distance or the traffic is more dense.
This course provides a series of techniques for avoiding and preventing pirates’ attacks and boarding, in theory at class, and practice and application of the maneuvering theory at sea. By this way the Master and the crew will become familiar with the yacht’s handling under highly stressful conditions. Moreover, the contribution of external factors such as weather conditions, coastal contour and maritime traffic will be analyzed in order to be exploited by the Master accordingly.
